Scott Steward’s Break Bread Marketing and Media: An Empire in the Making
Scott is the first to say that the life of an entrepreneur is not for everyone. As he puts it, “It is very difficult, it’s hard work, it requires long hours well past 5 p.m., you are the janitor and in most cases the proofreader, the accountant, the president… everything you can imagine in the company, you as the entrepreneur are that, so to my young entrepreneurs I say: stay focused, stay driven and stay passionate about your goals. Always go after and do things that make you happy.”
Scott was first introduced to entrepreneurism from his mother, at an age when diapers weren’t such a distant memory. He felt it very important to be afforded the chance to own his own business. Upon graduating with a B.A. from Columbia College of Chicago, he accepted his first job at a bank-decent, but he could not imagine working there 30-odd years waiting for retirement. So as he put it, “I became rebellious against the corporate environment.”
Scott’s first steps were to write down his ideas. He had to separate those that could be turned into reality and all the rest. He asked himself, “Why am I doing this? What’s the motivation to take on such endeavors?” If just for money, he would quickly know that represented the wrong reason. He wanted to give something positive to the world. He had to feel passionate. For many entrepreneurs, it takes a great deal of work to convert ideas into reality, and money is often the primary motivator.
Here is an opportunistic entrepreneur: “I always look for new opportunities to get to the next level…” While still in high school, Scott and his cousin ran a business promoting parties with entertainers like MC Lyte, Common and TLC. Even though he was exposed to entrepreneurism at a young age, he did not fully realize all that went into the business. Everything brought in was spent, and it took years to turn a profit because of his handling of expenses. Any company can bring in good amount of money but still fall well short. Scott now makes sure that he has multiple revenue streams coming in to keep the business liquid.
Break Bread’s make-or-break year came in 2001. Scott had gotten sick to the point where the doctors were doubtful that he would ever walk again; this news came on top of several money-losing projects, which led him to question his being an entrepreneur. Those questions remain to this day, especially now with three children. Through faith, his questions and doubts have always been answered.
As a teacher, Scott feels well equipped to help other people. “I spent the first 24 years of my life without any real mentoring or anybody really around to teach me what obstacles to avoid.” He has many projects in the works, including a book, tee-shirt line, and collaboration with the Chicago Urban League.
The legacy Scott would like to leave for future entrepreneurs is authenticity; when he is gone, people will say that he was a real person, with clear and forthright messages and lessons learned. “I’d like parents to embrace the concept of entrepreneurism for young people. It’s clear that in this economy, the idea of working for one company for 30 years is pretty much gone; we will never go back to that environment… and must think globally.”
Scott stresses a final word of wisdom that entrepreneurs would do well to take to heart: “Don’t let money be the goal; if you love what you are doing, the money will surely follow.”

I am graduating from the IL Institute of Art with a BA and did an internship in New York, with W Magazine. My fiance is relocating to Denver, CO for his job and wondering if anyone that lives in Denver could tell me if there are any jobs in event planning, public relations or marketing. I’m having a hard time finding anything related to my degree out there. I am mostly looking to work for a magazine, newspaper…more of a media job, but they seem very scarce in Denver. I’m in Chicago so there are a lot of jobs here but have to make a sacrifice and move with my fiance, hope you can help thanks.
When you are thinking about Denver and considering residing there for a while, think about what will be. I can tell you that there are jobs that exist in that area. Namely Beer and Sports. Admittedly I believe that a bit more culture would be wonderful. But also remember that Colorado is a most educated state. The change is in the wind. You could be part of what brings the culture that we need.
Stay West of I-25. I would recommend you look at Broomfield. They are building several ritzy hotels there. I believe that Denver will boom soon. Get invested now.
