Why You Shouldn’t Be Hiding Behind Privacy Settings in the Social Media World

We’ve all heard it: “Potential employers search for you on social media sites, so don’t have anything under your name that will turn them off”. While this is true, it is not the end of the story. Microsoft conducted a survey to gather data on what resources recruiters and HR professionals use to snoop on potential candidates.

“Research commissioned by Microsoft in December 2009 found that 79 percent of United States hiring managers and job recruiters surveyed reviewed online information about job applicants…The research comes from interviews with over 1,200 hiring and recruitment managers and 1,200 consumers in the United States, the U.K., Germany and France.”

Does this have to be a negative impact on your chances of landing the job? Not at all! What this translates into is that employers are dedicating a significant amount of time and resources to find additional information on potential candidates. I’d also recommend creating a personal website and blog using WordPress – this is a great way to get noticed and show employers that you are someone who goes above and beyond. A full blog/website can be setup within hours using WordPress. What’s a few hours worth in respect to a potential major career boost?
