Students at SIMC witness the first ever National Cyber Media Conclave
Cyber media is the field in the present media scenario which is the backbone of the functioning of all the media and any other field. No system can work with out the help of cyber space these days.
Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication (SIMC) organized the first ever National Cyber Media Conclave in its history on 28th march ’07,Saturday at their lavale campus. The day witnessed many stalwarts from the cyber media who shared their views about the cyber industry with the students of the institute. Symbiosis International University Dean and SIMC Director, Ujjwal Kumar Chowdhury inaugurated formally with a click of the mouse button. The day was split into two sessions, viz., the first concentrated on the social aspects of the new media, and the next on branding.
Prof. Chowdhury started off the program by praising the students of 2010 batch for conceptualizing the event and introduced the five member team comprising Hamsini Ravi, Anisha Gooptu, Charul Bajaj, Nishant Shah and team leader Deepali Pavagadhi – which had organized the whole event.
Kiruba Shankar, the first speaker of the session is Founder CEO of Business Blogging Pvt. Ltd. And Co-founder of Five Technologies. He highlighted the importance of social media in the present changing lives. According to him it was imperative for students to engage themselves in blogging and use it as their personal space to reflect their opinions. This will help them function effectively in the dog eat dog world beyond the student life. He further added that the internet and blogs is a double edged knife, and thus one should learn to survive with it.
Next to speak was Mr. Shivam Vij, Journalist with Open Magazine in New Delhi, quoting an example of tsunami explained how cyber media comes in handy when in and how it gives a platform to reach out to the global voices. The third speaker, Viewspaper Founder Shiv Bhaskar Dravid explained the importance of media as the fourth estate in the society. He believed that the fourth estate keeps a vigil on the other 3 pillars of democracy through citizen journalism. Ms Jasmeen Patheja, a representative of Ashoka: Innovators for the Public, talked on sexual harassment in public places and the blank noise online campaign which had led to the formation of a mass catharsis.
For the post lunch session the first speaker was Rajesh Lalwani, CEO and Founder Blogworks, who stressed that mainstream media misquotes people. This makes it important for people to start being vocal. He said, “Marketing is not a bad word, even god needs marketing.” The mainstream media is loosing its credibility due to the changing consumer behavior is in for which online media plays a major role, he added.
The next speaker Ms Rashmi Dhanwani, Manager for Media and Internet, Breakthrough talked about internet as a tool of mass mobilization and gave example of the “Bell Bajao (Ring the Bell)” campaign on domestic violence – a 360 degree multi-media campaign including www.bellbajao.org – which has user generated content. She also explained the audience in giving details about various campaigns taken up by them. Mr. Namit Bimbhat, CEO – Switch Media, gave his insights about the online marketing options present in community around your brand by empowering customers. Mr. J. Mahadevan, Vice President – Products – Bharatmatrimony.com talked on cyber brand evolution and its growth in the market today. Mr. Atul Chitnis, Senior Vice President – Geodesic Information Systems, the last speaker for the day, spoke on the business of open source softwares. He explained the students how the gadgets which have become an integral part of their lives would stop working with these open source softwares. The two sessions concluded with a question and answer session. The day ended with the felicitation of the speakers and an interactive workshop of the students with Mr. Lalwani.
