How Filter Media Work. Guidelines You Would Like To Learn
Biological filter action places a heavy load on the available oxygen in the water, which is essential to keep the bacteria alive and working efficiently. To cater for this demand, use air stones, supplied by a suitably sized air pump, in the biological stages. Place these stones underneath the media or in the transfer ports between the stages of a multi chamber filter.
You can add more air stones at the end of the biological system to meet the oxygen demand of the koi. Another way of improving the oxygenation of the water is to use a trickle filter. In this system, a small amount of water is pumped high above the waterline and then allowed to free fall through the air, tumbling over an open media on the way down.
This action breaks the water into tiny droplets, greatly increasing its surface area and hence its ability to absorb oxygen from the air. Bacteria need food as well as oxygen to survive. In the colder months, because of a reduced feeding level, the koi will produce less waste and the bacterial bed will die back.
If water circulation has not been stopped over the winter months, then the biological filter will not have died completely, even if the water temperature has been allowed to fall to just a few degrees. Exercise a cautious feeding regime in the spring to prevent rising levels of ammonia and nitrite in the pond.
Feeding with commercially produced products, such as wheat germ pellets or home boiled wheat or barley, is ideal at the time. These heavy foods sink to the bottom of the pond and make it easy for the koi to feed naturally. Small quantities of brown bread, broken up and rolled into pellets, are also a good starting food for the spring. Adjust feeding according to the temperature of the pond water.
