Olympus WS-210S Voice Recorder Plus Review
It seems like just the other day that we were all listening to music on our walkmans, only to replace them shortly afterwards with CD players. Of course today, it’s almost unheard of to see someone with a portable CD player. Yes, mobile phones and other digital media devices have gained an incredible amount of popularity in recent times, and it’s easy to see why, when one considers that we no longer have to carry all sorts of gadgets around with us.
Yes sure, many of today’s digital devices have a voice recorder but for the most part, the quality leaves a lot to be desired. Of course, the primary function of a mobile phone is to make and receive call, with a voice recorder a voice recorder only being added in as a secondary feature. Apart from the quality differences, if you only need a voice recorder, then a mobile phone is far from being your cheapest option. Also, the vast majority of people already own a mobile phone so of course, they may be reluctant to buy a new one simply for this reason.
When one considers the facts I’ve just mentioned, it’s easy to see why so many people are still purchasing voice recorders. In fact, the Olympus WS-210S is living proof of this trend. Not only does it have a stunning finish with controls that are easy to navigate, but even the screen is simple enough to ensure that even at a glance, you can see this is one device that won’t break the bank.
The recording features are very good capable of recording up to 138 hours of standard quality digital audio. That is equivalent to nearly 6 days straight of recording time so it is a must have for travelers that want something ultra-compact yet capable of recording a lot. The audio format used for recording is Microsoft’s Windows Media Audio (WMA) format so Windows users should have absolutely no issues when it comes to playback compatibility.
Another great feature of the Olympus WS-210S is that it uses Variable Control Voice Actuator (VCVA) technology. Essentially, this prevents the device from recording when no sounds are being detected. As you can well imagine, having this technology onboard will not only prevent the recorder from using unnecessary power, but it also eliminates having to edit out long moments of silence.
The fact that this device also has a 512MB built-in Flash Memory makes it even more desirable. Not only can you create up to 5 individual folders, but each folder can hold up to 199 items. Additionally, when you don’t use it for its voice recorder function, you still have the option of using is purely as an independent storage device.
Weighing on 47 grams, the Olympus WS-210S is an ideal recorder to carry on your person. Of course, just as with cameras and mobile phones, the battery life depends largely on the quality setting you choose to use. However, the device does come with six different setting, thus allowing you to set it up according to your requirements, be it longer battery life, or be it more storage capability.
While this handy little record may lack voice filtering, it does however offer speed control, and considering it only has a price tag of $70, it’s hardly surprising to see it’s become immensely popular.

Solia isn’t bad. It’s better than the stuff you could just buy at Walgreens or whatever, for sure. But Chi is definitely better. No doubt.
