Hard Drive Recovery Software- An eminent need

Media sharing across my network?
I currently have a laptop connected by wireless to a router which is connected to my cable modem – connected to this router also is my xbox 360 elite via wired connection – i am wanting to buy a external network hard drive (up to 1.5 terabytes) to connect to the router via ethernet / USB, and have my laptop and 360 have access to all the media i would have stored on the new hard drive.
I am under the assumption that the above is possible, but i do not want to buy the wrong type of hard drive for example – so looking from some advice in the interim
What equipment would i need to make this all possible
Its best to get a USB external HD, the 360 might have a hard time seeing the network HD, but will def get to the data through laptop.
