Re-Defining New Families: Segments, Stats, Brands, Facts
Look out Leave-It-To-Beaver, there is a new wave of pet acupuncturists, homeless college grads and extended roommates changing the traditional family dynamic. This New Family rationalizes treating their pets better than their children (“Of course we give our puppy acupuncture. It makes little Snuggles feel relaxed and rejuvenated!”), asks if they can have their old room back (“Mom. Dad. I know you turned my old room into a study, but can you turn it back because I need a place to stay for a while?”) and are returning to dorm life with communal apartments. Multi-Gen Roomates, Extended Companions and Pet-Centrics are the segments changing the way we view the traditional family in the 21st Century.
Defining Characteristics
Multi-Gen Roomates
Multi-Gen Roomates are trading in their queen for a twin bed. Just one of the many sacrifices of returning to mom and dads’ to reduce the high cost of living. They are Boomerang Kids, or late 20s to 30s individuals that need to bide some time by living at moms’ and dads’ until they can get back on their feet. The G.I Generation (parents of Baby Boomers) are also making the same migration to their children’s homes. As the economic slump has depleted their retirement funds, the G.I. Generation find themselves in the same position as their grandchildren.
Key Facts:
- There are more than 4 million multi-generational families in the U.S., according to a U.S. Census Bureau report
- About 40 percent of 2008 grads still live with their parents, according to Monster’s 2009 Annual Entry-Level Job Outlook
Brand Profile: Netflix, Wal-Mart
Extended Companions
Extended Companions are not willing to bite the bullet and move back in with mom and dad. Instead, they are pooling funds to get a place with their friends. While most Extended Companions envisioned a white picket fence in their near future, they are faced with the harsh reality that financially they just can’t afford it. For the meantime, they can bunk with their friends until they can get back on their feet.
Key Facts
- The share of 3-bedroom searches in the area around the Washington DC grew by 87% as more people bunk with roommates to reduce the high cost of living — a rising trend across the country, according a study by MyNewPlace.com
Brand Profile: IKEA, Craig’s List
Pet-Centrics
Dogs and cats are the brothers and sisters or sons and daughters of Pet-Centrics. The seek companionship in animals. Pet-Centrics are typically older couples or singles that put pets on an impossibly high pedestal, sometimes higher than their own children…

Long trip to the Bahamas, always end up overpacking! Need advice?
Travel Packing lists possible?
I’m spending a day in washington dc, and then i will take an airplane to the bahamas for a week. I always end up packing so much that it’s filled all the way to the top, and so much that i can’t put my new clothes in my suitcase coming back.
Any traveling and packing suggestions when it comes to packing for a long trip?
Any ideas on how most airlines charge by baggage? By weight? or just by the number of bags? How many carry on items are you allowed on?
I’m planning on taking a medium average size duffel bag on the airplane that will provide a couple extra days, just to be safe if my luggage is lost or delayed or stolen or something horrible happened.
I will be putting in that bag, a few good books, along with the kindle, and other various stuff?
*What types of stuff do you like to bring on the plane with you to enjoy your flight with?*
Does your labtop(inside the case) count as another carry on?
First off, do not take so many clothes with you. Take 4 or 5 pairs
of shorts and shirts. If you are going to Nassau, you can pick up
T-Shirt so cheap you’d be better off buying them. I’m sure this
will be true on other islands as well. Take capris or a pair of jeans
for going out at night. Bahama islands are very laid back so you
will not need to dress up unless you plan to go to a very nice
restaurant or a club that has a dress club. Take your older undies
and if they are on their last leg, toss them before you return home.
For the best packing, roll your clothes. I always do this and it saves
room and if you lay them out, press out wrinkles with your hands and
roll, press out wrinkles with your hands, roll until in a small roll and
pack. Also, take a bottle of Downy Wrinkle Release it works great.
If you wear your bulkiest shoes, this will give more room in your suitcase or duffel. Think of how your normally pack and just cut down.
I would suggest a swimsuit but do not take beach towels. Make sure
you pack sunscreen with at least an SPF of 45. Since you are going
on vacation, leave jewely at home except for your watch and other
things you always wear. You do not need much jewelry and you can
purchase some if you choose. Make sure to pack at least one pair
of flip flops as I’m sure you’ll want to wear them lots. You’ll need socks if you wearing tennis shoes. Perhaps 4 pair and roll these, too.
As far as your questions about the airlines – contact the airline website
and see what their guidelines are. I would suggest you try to get by
with a carry on and not check a bag. This makes it much easier, just
grab your bag and go, no waiting in the lines to retrieve luggage.
Unless your laptop is in your duffel bag, it will count as a carry one.
