What is the Difference Between?
What is the Difference Between LLC (Logical Link Control), MAC (Media Access Control), and CSMACD (Carrier Sense Multiple Access Collision Detection) “services” built into a Network Interface Card?
LLC and MAC are both sub-layers of the Data-Link layer on the OSI model. LLC is the higher of the two; MAC is the lower of the two.
CSMA/CD defines what to do when there are packet collisions. It first has those that detect incoming data while they are sending data to stop their transmission and send a jamming signal. Then it has the two sending parties each wait a random amount of time, (independent of each other, that is, sender A waits random time B and sender Y waits random time Z,) then try again.
