Tips for Cheap (and Happy) Laptop Shopping
In the current economic state, everyone seems to be looking for ways to cut costs. Often people are trying to balance a growing need to stay connected in a high-tech world with the need to conserve resources. Fortunately, buying a cheap laptop can actually be a simple thing if you start with the correct attitude. It can also be a good investment. On the job hunt it speaks volumes about your tech savvy to bring in your own presentation. The portability of your information is fantastic for entrepreneurs and homemakers alike. If your needs are simple you can probably find what you need at a very reasonable price.
Some things to consider before shopping:
1. What do you need to do with it? Ask yourself if this is a status symbol, a working tool, a device from enjoying online media, or a gaming system. Customizing your search to meet your specific needs can help reduce costs. For example: if you need the laptop for heavy spreadsheet work, then you want more processing power, but less graphic or media capability. If you want a cheap laptop, don’t expect to get everything – but be specific and you will get what you need.
2. Do your research. Once you have examined your motives and needs, research your options. Don’t automatically choose a name-brand system because you think it’s better – research the particular models you are interested. Find online reviews of the product, but take them with a grain of salt. Do not automatically discount a laptop because you are not familiar with the maker. Check the specs, the research, and the reviews. When it comes to high tech – unless you’ve got formal training – don’t trust your instincts, do the work. It will pay off.
3. Consider a refurbished product. Don’t be a laptop snob. If you are going for cheap and functional this can sometimes be your best bet. Always check the reputation of the seller before committing yourself to a sale, but it doesn’t hurt to keep an open mind.
4. Decide what kind of investment you are willing to make. If this is a laptop to write college papers with, perhaps a 4 year lifespan is acceptable. If this is a key tool in your entrepreneurial business plan, be prepared to spend more and get a service contract. Do you considerate a casual tool to get the job done, or is a business asset?
5. Don’t let the salesperson win. Sure, they may know more about the systems and capabilities than you do, but you know more about what your requirements are. Make a list of the desired features before you go shopping, and stick to it. Salespeople often will try to up-sell the product with options you don’t necessarily need. If you want it cheap – the stick to your list.
In summary – do not make an impulse decision. Analyze your needs and your budget, and then shop around. Laptops can be super cheap, or super expensive, or anywhere in between. Knowing your own requirements, what you must have and can live without can make laptop purchasing simple.

Irish Wolfhound or Scottish Deerhound?
I really want one and this is the first time in 12 years that we are dog free. Our last dog was medium to large Otter Hound and he lived to be 18. I’m concerned with the short lifespan of the very large dog breeds but this has been my favorite type of dog for as long as I can remember. Also, they are very hard to come by in my area. Is this a good idea or am I just kidding myself? Can I even get a Scottish Deerhound in the Midwest?

I adore both of these breeds!!!
But I don’t have the room for a giant breed. I do, however have sighthounds (same class of dog as these 2 breeds).
The Irish Wolfhound is a the tallest of all breeds. Lifespan is shorter than the Deerhound. Wolfhounds are heavier built. Deerhounds are slimmer in body style…. a touch more like a Greyhound. Deerhound lifespans are around 12 or so… slightly longer than the Wolfhound.
