A lot of teenagers succumb to peer-pressure and start smoking cigarettes for fun. Most of the teenagers will admit to this fact. These constitute just a few of the factors that drag teenagers into this addictive habit. Movies do exert considerable influence on the psyche of teenagers. As parents, we tend to underestimate the influence movies have on our children’s behaviour and life. Children grow up seeing their heroes and other role models smoking in public. Reports point to the fact that the more our teenage sons and daughters see their favourite movie stars smoking in movies, the more chances of them starting to smoke. And, according to statistics, four out of every 10 teenagers who smoke today were in some way or the other influenced by their heroes’ smoking exploits. So, even if we educate our children regarding the dangers posed by smoking, it may not be acceptable for them, as movies tend to undermine the good message. As a corollary to this, the state heads have stipulated that the major movie studios must include anti-smoking public service announcements at all movie houses where people are shown smoking cigarettes.
Nicotine is endowed with the ability to suppress one’s appetite and the metabolic processes. The interesting fact is that these characteristics of nicotine have made it a popular diet tool mainly put to use by teenage girls as well as grown-up women.
The reasons cited by these girls were related to the concerns and fears surrounding gaining weight. Parents play a significant part in their teenage sons’ and daughters’ decision to get rid of the habit of smoking cigarettes. Psychologists say that teenagers who feel that their parents do not approve of their habit are less likely to smoke compared to others. It would be wise on your part to get to know and become familiar with your teenager’s friends and other associates. And, if possible, build good acquaintance with these friends’ parents as well.
