Partition Recovery – How to Recover Partition on a Hard Drive?

Found out I have four partitions on my drive?
I was looking around on the web to setup Linux on my drive and found out I have four partitions on my hard drive through windows disk mangment.
Laptop is a Dell INSPIRON E1505 so it does have a media packet with it.
The partitions are in order with no fault tolerance:
Basic FAT with a EISA configuration. 55 MB capacity,.
Second one is a FAT32 basic unknown partition. 3 GB capacity.
Third one is a basic NTFS system partition with 69.47 GB.
(This must be the main partition I am using for windows)
Fourth one is a basic FAT32 unknown partition with 2 GB of capacity.
It also mentions it is the media direct feature on this laptop.
The last partition is for my CDROM.
Now from what I read, these might be primary partitions.
Is basic another name for it?
Anyone know why I have four partitions on my drive already and if so, how do I remove them or change them?

possibly a boot partition, keeping emergancy boot proceedures for re-installing system. You probally cant get in here.

Possibly contains the re-install info, although useually, this is on the 1′st partition too, and is also possibly hidden from winhoes interaction.
Third one is a basic NTFS system partition with 69.47 GB.
Your probally right, this should show in winhoes as your ‘c’ drive.
You can use a better drive management utility, ie: Acronis Disc Director 10(WARNING: incorrect usage of this can, and will cripple your computer. It is somthing i only use in an emergancy, or i need to do somthing that the logical disk manager can’t. Ie: resize, merge, split, convert(primary <-> secondry, NTFS <-> fat32 )or move a partition)
Acronis will happily shave 6gb orf ya ‘c:’ drive, make a 1gb Linux Swap partition, and a 2.5gb Ext3 partition (for linux distro) and a 2.5gb partition(type irrelevent, but meh, another ext3 cant hurt) for all your files and programs.
Acronis should also be able to let you access the other existing partitons, but i’d reconmend leaving them alone. But if you must play.. highlight partition, r-clix -> advanced -> change type and manually change it, ie: basic FAT EISA -> FAT16, FAT32 unknown -> FAT32 LBA ect, and they should be accessible in winhoes(for purposes of making a back-up, otherwise leave alone!)
I wouldn’t reconmend installing OS selector10(comes with DD10, like xp logon screen, but fo OS’s) on your lappy, as it may overwrite important information in your 1′st partition, and recovery may become difficult. OS selector also doesn’t like server 03. But it does easily allow you to run multiple OS’s on one machine.
And acronis makes Pmagic look like the kids toy it is.
