WALL – A MASS MEDIA
Gnani, who is having multi dimensions as writer, journalist, and article publisher, etc, is familiar with his “O podu pakkangal”, which is published in Kumudam, a Tamil weekly. Every week he comes out with an issue relevant to social, educational, political, and economical, etc. In his “O podu pakkangal”, reader can look for two things probably. One is simplicity and another one is guts. He attacks political personalities right from the Chief Minister Karunanidhi to the Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh with his simple and reality sentences. Even in his recent write-up with regard to the Order issued by Chennai Corporation on beautification of walls in Chennai city by the means of drawings, paintings in order to reflect culture, tradition and happenings of Tamilnadu, he criticized in a different manner but has triggered readers mind set to think in a different way, triggered for broad vision.
At first, when I heard to the FM radio about the effort of Chennai Corporation on beautification process, I really praised them. I was happy with their decision, which will help Chennai to glitter with culture oriented paintings & drawings. Whereas when I read Gnani’s write-up, helped me to think broadly and people friendly. To me, prior to this write-up, wall is like a white board, which is to be used for drawings, paintings, rather than advertisements or other scribbling. But after his write-up, to me “Wall is a Mass Media”. This article has been come out, since I was impressed with Gnani’s write-up.
There are sayings in Tamil, which praises as well as disgraces the wall as “Kazhuthai Kettal Kutti Chuvaru”, “Suvar Irunthalthan Chitiram” . How many of us know the strengths and benefits of the walls. To me Wall is a Mass Media. Rich can promote his business by advertising in print as well electoronic medias like The Hindu, Dhina Thanthi; Cinema theaters and in satellite channels, etc. Now only am able to understand the specialty of Tamilian, why he makes use of wall for the purpose of advertisements. But do we know the unfortunate that happening in using walls? It is again targeted by the rich people/entrepreneur too and started to exploit the walls for the purpose of advertisements. Those who are traveling in Chennai sub-urban trains only know that how many of the vulnerable population are depending on wall for their business promotion.
But recently, as part of beautification, the Chennai Corporation has aimed at walls of Chennai, they started to draw paintings the important statues, entertainment facilities, tourism spots, culture oriented, etc. What we can achieve by painting the above mentioned. We can compromise ourselves that our future generation will learn about our statues, picnic spots and culture through these kinds of effort. If truth to be told that people of this modern age are well aware of drawings, paintings and tourism spots, culture, tradition, social system, etc. We need to think wisely, do our people will learn all from these wall paintings??? Even if they are learning, what will be the outcome!! It is difficult to find culture, tradition, etc, since it is associated with very little population. We all are heard about Valluvar Kottam. Some of us have visited there, which propagates the well verse Tamil Poet Deiva Puzhavar Thiruvalluvar’s “ThirukKural”. The entire spot has been sculpted with his 1330 Thirukkural. In fact it is a good effort, but how many of us read Thirukkural, which has been sculpted there. We are not able to read and follow that great gift, even though printed in hand size books. I am afraid of future generation, will they make a visit to Valluvar Kottam at least. Any way let we back to wall…
Am not criticizing the entire effort t of Chennai Corporation, but I insist for systemization, which should systemize the wall advertisements. Corporation can allot some space for advertisements alone. And ensure the advertising right only for the economically weaker section. They can come with certain criteria for systemization, which should prevent rich people to occupy the walls for advertisements. Certain advertisements either promoted by richer or weaker, like sexually aroused posters, advertisements by fake groups for the treatment of sexual problems should be strictly banned. Politically it has been occupied for inviting the mass for their political conferences, meetings, etc; and also they are scribbling on walls to gather public support for vote casting to their nominees during the election period. All these have to be banned or to be regulated. Those who are advertising for conference and for vote gathering are not a part of “economically weaker group”.
If we ban wall advertisements, most of the artists, painters and field related labours will lose their jobs. Where will they go??? Will they go nearby districts??? In case the same order extended to nearby districts or entire Tamilnadu……. How they will survive? What kind of alternate job they can find. If paintings & drawings are drawn on walls, definitely it will take minimum 5 years for renewing the drawings. Till that where they will go and what they will do. If we ban wall advertisements, how the small entrepreneur will promote his business. How they can earn?? What they can save??
Revolution is possible, when our ideology works well. Beautification is essential, but it should not affect the bread winning capacity of the poor people.

General media and the “truth” they provide about news coverage?
So I posted a question with a media article and majority of the people read it and simply gave an answer. Well an individual pointed out to me that I needed to “check” my source for credability. So I did and I also acknowledged his point. (This question had to do with O’Reilly(yes I know O’Reilly isn’t a news reporter) and media outlets claiming their unbiased reporting.)
What it also did was make me wonder this.
Is there ANY media, including up to television, newspapers, scholarly journals, radio, nonprofit or profit, that will report simply the “facts?”
Whether or not it’s the reporter, the media outlet providing the coverage, executive management and even the reader.
Think about it, whether intentional or not will there not always be “some” form of bias when media covers politics and news?
Pretty much, no.
Everyone puts some spin on it — the best you can do is try to find the sources with the least spin. Like Associated Press and Reuters who go a long way towards requiring their writers to not insert opinion or analysis, just data.
Or the sources that at least openly acknowledge their bias — like the Daily show. They’re not real news and they freely acknowledge that. Or Air America, who freely admits they are expressing biased opinions.
O”Reilly and Olbermann and Hannity and Colmes — they all have a bias and they all claim they don’t. Which is far worse than admitting when you do.
