What is MAC Address?
If you want to know more about MAC addresses, then you will want to read this article. To begin with, what is MAC address? MAC is generally known as Media Access Control. It basically consists of a string of unique value that is associated with a network adapter. For your information, MAC addresses are also sometimes called as hardware addresses or physical addresses. The purpose or function of a MAC address is to identify the adapter or LAN. The typical address consists of a 12-digit hexadecimal number, which is of 48 bits. The first half of the number will contain the ID number of the adapter manufacturer. The second half represents the serial number that has been assigned to the adapter.
Furthermore, MAC address looks similar to an IP address, yet they are different. In fact, a MAC address works at the data link layer while an IP address operates at the network layer. Simply put, it is used for supporting hardware implementation while IP address is used for software implementation. In addition, you cannot change MAC address while IP address changes as the network device change from one network to another. For your information, the IP networks will be able to maintain a mapping or also known as ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) cache between IP address of a device and its MAC address. Simply, the ARP will be able to support the logic and keep the cache up to date.
As mentioned earlier, this address is designed to be fixed numbers. Nevertheless, there are ways for you to change MAC address. Now, why do you want to change your MAC address? One of the valid reasons is to allow your MAC address to work with your ISP (Internet Service Provider). There are a few ways to change MAC address. First is through cloning and second is through the operating system.

I have a IBM thinkpad X61 with Intel Pro/Wireless 3945ABG wireless card
I have the latest driver and running windows XP pro service pack 2 build 2002.
i tried to change the MAC address (media access control) address of my wireless card with no luck
i have tried using all the 3rd party programs i can find
including editing the registry.
I found my problem is that you can’t change the second digit of my MAC address.
for example I CAN: make it X0-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX but not X1-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX
every time i try to change the second digit, and after i type ipconfig /all, the mac address goes to the original one.
any ideas appreciated.

The MAC address of a computer is hard wired into the network card within it, and can not be changed. It has to be a unique number with information that identifies the make and model, otherwise it will not work on the Internet. If you were to change th address, and it conflicted with another card having that address, both would be locked out of the Internet.
There are ways to “spoof” a MAC address, that is force it to send out a different address. But even that is limited because it has to have certain numbers in place (such as the 2nd digit on your card) for the Internet to be able to knwo who to talk to it. So even with “spoofin” you are unable to totally change the number – and the change is not permanent.
If you need a different MAC address for some reason, you will need to get a different network card. Purchase a USB network card to use at that times when you want to conceal your real address. Or simply use a proxy server. That is a special service where you attach to a server, and then it creates a “fake” ip address, MAC, etc that you use to do your surfing.
But you can not change the MAC address of a network card. It is hard wired into the card.
